Ahhhh! My sense of smell!

As the saying goes, our sense of smell is tied to our memory and it’s true!

There is no dispute that the human memory can be triggered by sense of smell. Smell has been a key sense for humans in detecting food and poisons, but is not taken as seriously as the other senses like sight and hearing.

An interesting fact is that loss of smell can be related to memory loss and related diseases.

There has been “research tying the loss of smell to Alzheimer's disease and memory loss,” according to Bryn Mawr College’s website, Serendip.brynmawr.edu. In addition to loss of smell, “people who lose their sense of smell are deprived of taste and important aspects of functionality.”

Between two and three percent of the population is anosmic, which is the condition of loss of the sense to smell. Anosmic can be a result of exposure to harmful chemicals, head injury, aging and illness can all affect memory and can cause loss sense of smell says Serendip.

Serendip says, “About fifteen percent [of people] have some form of "odor blindness.”

If loss of smell occurs, it’s best to take a trip to a medical professional.

My friend actually can't smell! But they say that it's something to do with her sinuses, and there is a surgery that she can do, but it's not even definite if it would work.
