A hiccup is little more than a reflex and a fluctuation of the diaphragm. The cause for hiccups stems from the irritation of the vagus nerve or one of its branches that run to the abdomen from the brain. A hiccup is usually in reaction to digestive or breathing disturbances, so to combat a hiccup one must distract the nerve with another sensation or alter breathing patterns. Hiccups happen to everyone some time in their life and on average people hiccup 3 to 5 times a year; that’s a lot of hiccups! So what do we do to stop this inconvenience? Always yawning? Well you’re not alone! Everyone yawns, even animals. One of the most baffling questions is why? The answer is still a mystery, but we do know many things about yawns and what doesn’t cause them.

Some things we know about yawns are they last about 6 seconds, occur before we are even born, and are definitely contagious. Ever notice that when someone in a room yawns everyone else in the room starts to yawn? Studies suggest that the reason why everyone in a group yawns stems from our natural instinct to coordinate behavior in a group. It is believed that yawning was a way to signal an event, but nowadays it may just be a vestigial trait left over from our prehistoric years.

Anywhere from private pools at your own residence to water parks and public swimming pools can be dangerous and potentially lethal. Disinfectants are necessary to prevent the spread of diseases in crowded swimming pools and maintain the cleanliness of the water.

Many people throughout the world are plagued with difficult breathing. One specific type of breathing ailment troubling millions is Asthma. If you are one of the many suffering from asthma you are not alone, especially during the summer months. Even those without asthma may find it difficult to breathe the same way during the summer, but particularly those with asthma must be aware that the summer months can be pretty hard on you. Here are some things that you should keep in mind in order to prevent asthma flare ups and allow you to have a great summer.

Known as seasonal asthma, many experience asthma symptoms during high concentrations of pollen in the air, this is usually present during the summer months. If this is the case during the warmer parts of the year, then allergy medication can greatly improve your way of life. A good thing to keep nearby at all times is an emergency inhaler. An important thing to pay attention to is the news, which alerts you of high levels of pollen, allowing you to plan your day accordingly. The ozone layer is another thing to keep in mind that can affect the way you breathe. The news issues an ozone warning, alerting watchers to stay inside and avoid the sweltering heat. Typically, those suffering from asthma or other breathing related illnesses find it harder to breath the hotter it is outside. If you are experiencing difficulty breathing during the warmer months then you should speak to your doctor because you might have seasonal asthma.

Ever want to lighten your skin for any reason? Such reasons could be to lighten the appearance of a mole, remove freckles all together, or in some cases completely change the complexion of your entire body.

In today’s world, where people frequent the beach and utilize numerous over the counter products to darken the color of their skin and get that perfect beach bronzed body, there are many people who want the opposite result. Instead of a tanning bed, they would prefer a lemon.  Now the reasons behind this desire to lighten one’s skin are controversial in nature, bringing up issues of race supremacy, identity, and self image, but the fact remains that many people still want to become lighter. Society should take a look at the issue behind their desire, but meanwhile there are many companies harnessing this market.

To answer the needs of people wanting to become lighter in appearance, manufacturers make various skin-whitening products. Some warn that that active ingredients in these products could be dangerous and harmful, using chemicals such as mercurous chloride. Others argue that there are safe alternatives to bleach one’s skin, and that there are skin lightening formulas which do not contain chemicals harmful to skin and are safe to use. For example staying out of the sun is a good way to lighten one’s overall skin color, yet this can be trickier than you think. Understand this means no beach, protective clothing, and mostly indoor activities while your friends enjoy beautiful days.

Ever feel like you’re the only one hot and sweaty and when you look around everyone is comfortable and experiencing moderate temperatures?  This may mean that you have hyperhidrosis, or sweating more than would be expected for a particular environment.

Relief may come with the fact that you are not alone, many people suffer unknowingly with this condition and go about their lives never realizing that so much sweat is not normal. On the other hand, there are many people that are very much aware of the fact that they sweat so much and feel the need to alter their lives completely. These individuals tend to avoid physical exertion in fear of sweating profusely in public, standing near fans and air conditioning, wearing clothing with less restriction or lack of sleeves, and constantly reapplying antiperspirant and deodorant.

Those suffering from this disorder do so because they’re experiencing hyperactivity of the eccrine sweat glands. This condition can be generalized and sweating can be seen throughout the entire body or on a more localized level with sweat concentrated in specific areas such as armpits, groin, breasts, soles, and palms. There has been evidence that a strong correlation exists between patients who are experiencing higher levels of sweating and certain stimuli, such as anxiety, exercise, tension, pain, and certain drugs like nicotine and caffeine.

Baby bottle tooth decay is a very serious disease that is affecting many children ages 1-3. This decay is brought on by prolonged use of a baby bottle and typically occurs when the baby’s teeth start coming in.

To avoid thousands of dollars in dental fee, unnecessary pain and infection, and nutritional deficiencies, parents should think twice about opting for a bottle to make their child complacent.  

Research shows that children at the age of 1 should be consuming the same basic food groups as adults do in order to ensure proper nutrition. Solid food is a necessary source of calories for babies at this age and although it might be easier for parents to deal with a screaming baby in the middle of the night with a bottle in hand, they must realize that in the long run they are risking the health of their child.

What do certified home health aides do? They don’t work the traditional nine to five, they don’t work in an office building, and they don’t need to endure many years of college. They are in the business of helping people. Probably the most important and influential business one can be apart of and anyone with a heart can do it!

The National Association for Home Care and Hospice (NAHC) requires those wishing to become certified in home health aide to finish a 75-hour course, complete a written exam, and develop 17 skills for competency as determined by a registered nurse. At the end of this rigorous course a certified home health aide will have the knowledge and ability to assist those in need. Not only will a certified home health aide be equipped with invaluable information and training that will only help them succeed in their careers but will become a valuable asset to that individual for the rest of their life.
