Diets are for those with a death wish

Excessive workouts. Mini meals and calorie counting. Pills or supplements. These unhealthy gimmicks are typical dieting options offered the masses for quick and easy weight loss.

The problem with many commercial diets is that they can leave your body damaged. Many medical professionals agree that there is no such thing as quick-fixes to getting rid of weight in a healthy way.  In an article by Health.com, Isadore Rosenfeld, a cardiologist, said “a crash diet once won’t hurt your heart, but crash dieting repeatedly increases the risk of heart attacks.”

In addition to heart problems, a typical side-effect of starvation diets carry similar risks to anorexia and symptoms such as reduced immunity, increased chance of bone damage and hair loss can occur. Diets that include starvation and food aversion do more bodily harm than facilitate a healthy lifestyle. Such diets can cause the dieter to end up in the hospital if on a starvation diet if the diet lasts long enough.

While a sudden cold may not sound too life threatening, crash diets can do more than just heart and hair damage. Rosenfeld said, “Yo-yo dieting can also damage your blood vessels. All that shrinking and growing causes micro tears that create a setup for atherosclerosis and other types of heart disease.”

“The key to losing weight is a combination of diet and exercise,” says Dr. Rosenfeld. “One alone will not do it,” Rosenfeld said.
