Government finally setting limits on animal antibiotic use

Posted by windowjsas in FDA regulation , farmers , commercial farming , Antibiotics

Antibiotic use in commercially produced farm animals has become the norm in modern farming practices; however, the government may be finally placing a cap on the amount that producers are allowed to feed to their animals. Interestingly enough, this will only come in the form of guidelines, and not regulations meaning they will not be mandatory, although these will be the strongest guidelines that the FDA has ever issued (here is the official statement from the FDA). They will attempt to end the use of antibiotics simply for enhanced growth and enforce stronger veterinary oversight.

Most farmers feed their animals, particularly piglets and calves, antibiotics for weeks after weaning to ensure they are healthy especially since they live in such overcrowded pens, but then continue this practice for several more months to ensure faster growth. These new guidelines are much needed as medical experts say that many bacteria such as some strains of E.coli and salmonella are becoming antibiotic resistant, for the very reason that so much of our food comes pre- pumped with antibiotics.

                                                                          Effects of Antibiotics

Although antibiotics can be thought of as a "life saver" can antibiotics really hurt us in the long run? Researchers have found that taking so many antibiotics for different sickness's and colds can actually lower a persons immune system and cause their body to actually become dependent on the drugs, lowering the natural recovery process their body has. Researchers have also stressed the importance of this claim when it comes to children. Since a child's body is growing and changing yearly giving your child to many antibiotics can cause damage to their immunity and to certain diseases and sickness's "Antibiotics are extremely important in medicine, but unfortunately bacteria can become resistant to them"- www.bacteriamuseum.org. Antibiotics are very important in the world of medicine and can be attributed to saving many lives in the fight against disease and sickness, we as a society just have to make sure we aren't abusing and misusing them. Abuse of medical drugs can only cause harm, taking medication for longer periods of time then prescribed or taking more then the recommended dosage will not help or speed the recovery process. Also running to the doctor every time you may have a sneeze or starchy throat may also be a waist of time, its sometimes best to just stay at home, relax, rest and get some good sleep to get over a cold or flu.
