"Energy" Drinks

Energy drinks are among the pop culture craze, as large companies such as Redbull, Five Hour Energy, and Monster, claim to offer us that extra surge that our bodies sometimes desire to stay active and alert. They are everywhere we turn, from grocery stores, convenience shops, school campuses, bars, clubs, random vending machines and even break rooms at certain places of employment. Does that mean these drinks are harm-free? Most health professionals would probably answer no to that question.

Do You Know What’s in Your Food?

You shouldn’t believe everything you read, especially when it comes to the labels on your food. Companies are able to mislead consumers by advertising healthier foods when in actuality their products contain completely different amounts of vitamins, carbohydrates, sugar, protein, fat- both saturated and unsaturated, sodium, cholesterol and various other ingredients.

How many people have a sweet tooth? I sure am one of them. Americans consume about 155 pounds of sugar each year. Well you can begin by thanking manufacturers who are quietly increasing the amount of sugar to our everyday foods.

One bowl of sweetened cereal for breakfast, one cup of fruit yogurt for a snack, and one scoop of sherbet for dessert. You've just consumed more than 20 teaspoons of sugar without opening the sugar jar.

High fructose corn syrup actually worse for you than sugar?

Since high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) was introduced 40 years ago, obesity rates in the US have skyrocketed.  A recent Princeton study conducted on rats with identical calorie intakes of sugar and HFCS produced surprising results.  The rats that were ingesting the HFCS had alarming rates of obesity compared to those ingesting sugar.  So why do we use so much of the stuff?  Unfortunately, the consumer base is not as organized as the special interests.  Corn subsidies and high sugar tariffs have contributed to the boom of HFCS use, which as it seems, has contributed to alarming rises in obesity.

For health's sake, it's important that the consumer becomes more educated on this topic.  Avoid sodas and fruit drinks that are made from a syrup base.  It will most likely surprise you when you realize how much HFCS you ingest, but the results of controlling your intake or removing it from your diet altogether will be beneficial.
