Sprinting to Good Health

Posted by kateg in tips , Running , health

Running is the cheapest and quickest way to get in shape.  Dedicating 30 minutes to running each day will improve your health and body.  Getting started is the only hard part.  Becoming motivated to put those sneakers on and step outside of the house is the only obstacle that has to really be overcome.  Once you get going, the actual action of running is not that bad.

Of course, there are a few things to be prepared for.  While running, you may feel a sharp pain in your side, but don’t be alarmed – it’s just a stitch.  To cure the pain, slow down or walk and breathe in deeply through your nose and out of your mouth.  Eventually, the stitch with go away and you can get back to your running.  Make sure to not eat heavy before exercising because it can cause the stitch to develop.

Metabolism BOOST

Posted by jross713 in weight loss , tips , metabolism , fitness

The speed of your metabolism is based on a variety of factors. Genes, gender, and age are the three most influential components, and they can ultimately make or break your diet. Being familiar with your metabolism, if it changes from season to season, if exercise will increase it significantly, etc., is an important tool for staying fit and healthy.

If you are male, your metabolism is likely 10-15% faster than any given female. This is mainly because most males have a higher muscle mass, and muscles are what burn the most calories. While 70% of the calories you ingest daily are used for basic bodily functions, the rest is used for fuel for  physical activity and for digestion. It's important to make sure you are not eating more calories than your metabolism can burn.

To speed up your metabolism and ensure that you're not going to put on pounds by not burning off calories, there are a few simple things you can do. Exercising more often will boost your metabolism, kickstarting your body. Incorporating more cardio into your fitness routine will also help increase the speed of your metabolism, burning off more calories at a faster rate.

How to Workout Without Hitting the Gym

Posted by jross713 in workout , tips , health

I didn't have time to get to the gym yesterday. Or the day before that. Or today. I'm aching to get some cardio in, and maybe some squats, but my schedule simply doesn't allow for it. These are realities we have to face as busy college students and working professionals. Here are some ways to incorporate small workouts and weight loss tips into your day.

1. Take the stairs. Especially if your destination is on a low number floor (2, 3, 4!), opt for the stairs instead of the elevator. It's kind of like doing squats, and it's a green alternative that will save energy in the building.

2. Don't drink coffee. Keeping yourself properly hydrated is one of the best ways you can continue to burn calories throughout the day and keep your metabolism up. The caffeine and sugar in drinks like coffee, juice, tea, and soda are diuretics and will cause you to lose water and feel more fatigued.

1. If you're going to participate in outdoor activities, schedule them for early in the morning or late in the evening when the temperatures are cooler.

2. If you are spending lots of time outdoors, take consistent breaks to let your body cool down and recover from all the heat and sunshine.

10 Tips for Being and Feeling Healthier

Posted by jross713 in wellness , tips , health

It's halfway through the year and I bet your New Year's resolutions have gone straight out the window by now. Maybe it was to go to the gym more often, maintain a healthier diet, or call your mom more than once a week, but by this time of year it's hard to keep those promises, especially with the chocolate ice cream calling your name from your freezer. It's not too late to make new resolutions to keep your year healthy, stress-free, and positive.

1.) Breathe for 5 minutes. During the day while you're at the office or at school, let yourself sit and relax, just for a few minutes. Co-founder of Harvard's Benson-Henry Institute for Mind/Body Medicine, Hubert Benson, recommends taking these breathers a few times each day. It will clear your mind, slow down your pulse, and allow you to recharge.

Extreme Heat Health Tips

The sun is vital to all our lives, giving life to all living organisms in some way or another, as well as vitamin D, but it can also be a very deadly thing. Have you ever seen in the movies where somewhere is stuck wandering around in the hot dessert with the sun beating down on them and they start to feel fatigued and eventually delusional? Well that can actually happen, and does happen to many people who are unaware of the devastating effects of the sun.

The sun is powerful and the second we overlook its strong influence is when we end up with heat stroke or sun burn. Depending on the time of day and your latitudinal location it is sometimes best not to leave your house without some form of protection from the sun and its hazardous rays. For the majority of the world, the sun is strongest from 10 am to 3 pm so try to avoid extreme heat during this part of the day. Those wanting to exercise should think about either exercising early in the morning or after the sun is beginning to set. If this is not at all possible there is always the option of exercising indoors. Indoor locations such as malls, or gyms, provide individuals with areas to exercise while they enjoy the use of air conditioning.

Some locations are subject to extreme dry heat, whereas others have a more humid climate. An example of a location enduring hot and dry weather conditions is Las Vegas, Nevada. In such an environment, one could sweat and the sweat is evaporated almost instantaneously, which can actually be more dangerous, for people don’t realize they are becoming dehydrated and losing water. Extreme heat is known as heat waves when it occurs during only certain parts of the year and is usually joined with high humidity. Prolonged exposure to extreme heat can have many detrimental effects on your health. An extreme heat health implication is heat stroke, which if severe enough can cause disability or even prove deadly.
